We are now in the middle of summer. For that reason we hope you have raised the height of your lawnmower as we recommended in June. There are also other mowing techniques to help ensure your lawn is healthy and attractive.
Bag or Mulch – In almost every case we recommend that you mulch the grass clippings. They have a high amount of nutrients and water to naturally feed your lawn. And contrary to many beliefs, thatch build up is not cause by grass clippings.
When to mow your lawn – It is harmful to your lawn to cut more than 1/3 of the total blade at any one time. For this reason we recommend that you cut your lawn once per week regularly.
We also recommend to avoid mowing your lawn when it is wet. Mowing a wet lawn will cause any disease that may be present to spread quickly. It will also compact the soil from the weight of the mower which can reduce root growth and look unattractive.
Also if possible, switch the direction you mow every week. If you mow north and south the first week, make sure to mow east and west the next. If you mow the same direction every time, your grass will begin to lay down from being pushed over in the same direction and also cause tire ruts. This will not only create an unhealthy cut, but also one that is not pleasing to the eye.
